Snow – Snow – and more Snow!
I’m going to start off with a little quote of Bill’s that recently received a bit of attention… ‘if the weather hurts your feelings, you’re in the wrong business.’ Well, he said something like that – I don’t always pay attention. Ha! Despite this season’s lack of “Heavy Snow Fall Warnings”, the only thing a person can do really is to stay positive and trust Mother Nature will deliver. Earlier this week I saw a dumping of 40-50cm in the forecast, which has since disappeared, and is now back in the discussion. Who knows!
But assuming all things are a go (and trust we will do all we can to make that happen, including make snow when conditions permit), allow me to outline what’s coming up for events and fun times at Poley Mountain. We have a full entertainment line-up for the month of March, most Thursdays through Saturdays. I will outline dates and gigs if space permits; otherwise, check our Events Calendar under “What’s Happening” at poleymountain.com.
Poley Bear will celebrate his birthday Saturday, March 5th. CBC will be broadcasting live that day, with a few of Poley Bear’s close friends. This should be a great day on the Mountain for kids and families, with cake for kids around 12:30pm and live music in the Bar & Grill by Stephen Leblanc from 10-12pm and 1-3pm.
Again focusing on the kids, big and little, Sunday March 6th the Carousel Cross Fun Race is scheduled. With medals and prizes up for grabs, the main achievement with winning this event are bragging rights for the year. I seem to recall a couple of photo finishes last season, girls beating boys, and one ‘big kid’ over taken by another ‘big kid’ before the finish line to steal bragging rights. This race is a hoot!
March 7th through the 11th marks the official NB March Break. Snow School’s camps however run from March 5th to 7th, again March 8th to 10th, and March 11th to the 13th. New this season is their Freeride March Break Park camp, running March 8th to the 10th. Learn all the basics you need to be comfortable in our Terrain Park and beyond. We also host a March Break Camp for those on Nova Scotia break, from March 15th to the 17th, and for those on PEI break from March 22nd to the 24th. Call Snow School at 433-7669 for more details and/or to get registered.
In addition to our Annual Dinner and Auction, we host what is called the “Annual Charity Challenge”. Saturday March 19th has been set for this season’s Charity Challenge. We’re always looking for new teams and new rivalries. This Challenge is full of fun, silly, and sometimes idiotic challenges. The money raised through this event will go to support Operation Back-Up, our fundraiser to support the purchase of a back-up generator for the new lodge. The time has come to de-throne Bill’s Beauties! Call 433-7668 to inquire.
Also on this weekend of March 19-20th, we will be hosting a first for ski hills in the area – Ski Cross Weekend! At the conclusion of March Break, we have committed to constructing a ski cross course, where the Terrain Park currently is. This will be the first of its kind in the immediate area for sure, and even possibly spanning Atlantic Canada. The weekend of the 19th and 20th, Poley Mountain will host racers from the Atlantic Provinces, for a NB Alpine Sanctioned Race Event, open to U10 through U21 age categories. Registration will be through the Poley Mountain Racing Club, so stay tuned for additional details as they become available. Upon completion of this event, the course will then be open to the public to enjoy, even possibly hosting a snowboard cross event should the interest level suggest.
Wrapping up the last weekend in March, we will host a fun Dual Slalom Race, as we did last season. The date for that event will be Saturday March 26th. We are also going to host a little shin-dig in the Bar & Grill; the Sussex Downtown Business Association Dance Party from 4-7pm; music provided by Crossroads. On Sunday, March 27th, we are revitalizing our Sunrise Sunday Easter Service from 8-9am with Poley’s delicious Breakfast Buffet to follow at 9am. I’m sure there will be additional details as we make our way through the Month of March. If you had forgotten, Easter is quite early this year! As an aside, those dreaming of longer days, Daylight Savings Time is set for Saturday, March 12th at 2am.
Looks like that’s all the space we have for this week – follow us on Twitter and Facebook for news and details. Check-out our Website for upcoming events and entertainment, and watch for us on Snap Chat, as we attempt to expand our social media presence. Cheers!
